Moissanite, a naturally occurring gemstone first discovered in 1893, has captivated the world with its remarkable resemblance to diamonds. Its fire, brilliance, and hardness rival that of diamonds, yet it comes at a more accessible price point. But what truly sets moissanite apart is its ethical and sustainable nature. Unlike diamonds, which are often associated with environmental damage and labor exploitation, moissanite is lab-grown, ensuring a conflict-free and environmentally conscious choice.

Excellent Heat Resistance


Silicon carbide, the constituent material of moissanite, is extremely chemically stable and has excellent heat resistance. While diamond has a heat resistance of approximately 800°C, moissanite has a heat resistance of up to approximately 1800°C.

Diamonds are lipophilic, so their brilliance is often clouded by cosmetic issues and various daily oil stains, requiring that they often be cleaned and maintained. Moissanite, however, is resistant to oil and grease, so its brilliance lasts longer.

Moissanite is a rare natural mineral composed of silicon carbide (SiC), discovered by Nobel Prize-winning chemist Dr. Henri Moissan in a crater created by a meteorite impact in Arizona. Moissanite, due to its structure, has excellent durability and is 2.5 times more brilliant than diamonds. It is also significantly less expensive than diamonds and in recent years has been widely used for fashion jewelry as well as engagement rings.

Moissanite is one of the most durable gemstones available. Diamonds have a cleavage property that can cause them to crack or chip upon impact during normal use, but moissanite has no cleavage property and boasts superior toughness compared to diamonds. Moissanite also has a high Mohs hardness rating of up to 9.6, which indicates the surface's susceptibility to scratching, making it ideal for engagement rings and other jewelry worn daily.

Moissanite passes as a diamond when using a diamond tester that detects thermal conductivity. This is because, unlike other gemstones such as cubic zirconia, it has a high thermal conductivity. Such moissanite (silicon carbide) is similar to diamond in appearance and characteristics, but it is composed of a different substance than diamond (carbon). Moissanite, which is extremely durable, brilliant, lustrous, and heat resistant, has gained popularity among people due to its attractiveness as a gemstone.

Moissanite and diamonds are so similar in appearance that it is difficult to visually distinguish them, but they can be identified using a device called a moissanite tester, which is used to distinguish between the two. Another method is to use a loupe to look at the top of the gemstone from an angle. In moissanite, you will see two slightly blurred lines, indicating double refraction.
